Well like I said, very good points here. I may think about it longer... it's not a decision I will make lightly. You're either all in or all out. It's just big trade off

Could one get plastic covers for couches? and maybe plastic sheets for mess on the ground?

sure you could cover your world in plastic but you would still have to clean up every accident and the sooner the better.

have you ever sat for any length of time on plastic? Try it and let us know how you like it.

uh-huh, and the dog would happily chew the plastic off, then puke it up. And would you really want to sit on plastic?

Also, I forgot to mention, if your dog happens to get fleas you'd be in for a not so fun time. I live in FL and once in a while my dogs despite my best efforts get them. It's not pretty. That can happen if the meds stop working for some reason or if you're late with or forget a dose, it happens since we're human OCD notwithstanding.

Another consideration, if your dog happens to have an accident - not the elimination type but one where it ingests something or is injured - that can be messy and expensive as well. Or becomes ill - that can be expensive and make a mess in your home as well as be time consuming requiring a trip to the vet, a special diet and giving the dog meds.

Having a dog is more than putting it in a crate while you're at work, feeding, watering and walking it. It is very much like having a perpetual child.

It would be more productive if you invested in therapy for your OCD.

My sacrifice for our family getting a dog?

Instead of being 3rd on the pecking order I'm #4 now.

1. Wife
2. Daughter
3. Dog
4. Me

It was helpful and absolutely on-topic because her OCD is her main concern about owning a dog. The OCD is preventing her from owning a dog. If she works on her OCD, she'll be able to comfortably own a dog eventually.
