Please just products or ideas which will protect my dog!

I am trying to keep my dog alive when taking her for walks...

Facts: In the last week my dog (on-leash) was chased by two different mod cut dogs (not on leash). My dog has previously been bitten by off-leash pit bulls twice.

My neighbor and her dog were bitten by another mod cutdog (off-leash) in the last week.

A month ago another neighbor's dog was bitten by a mod cut dog (off-leash).

ANYWAY... At this rate, I am afraid my dog will one day get a fatal dog bite by one of these loose dogs.

I would like to PROTECT by dog from such a bite BEFORE she is bitten!

Is there any sort of "chain mesh" or armor plating (if you will) which a dog could wear around its neck - that would keen another dogs teeth from sinking in?

Protective wear?

For example butchers wear protective chain mesh gloves to prevent knife injuries to their hands. Like this...
Amazon.com: Stainless Steel Mesh Hand Glove - Cut Resistant (S): Home Improvement

Anything like that for a dog?

Other ideas to protect my dog?

How about call the freaking animal control for the dogs and the police after their owners? Otherwise, drive your dogs somewhere else to walk them if you're not going to take a more aggressive approach to cleaning your neighborhood up.

On anther thread, I talked about using a cattle prod to deter other dogs from coming close. Its not about shocking the Stray's (unless its unavoidable), but about scaring them away. Triggering the cattle prod makes a loud ZAAAAPP CRACK ZAAAAAAPPPP!! noise that freaks other dogs out. Pepper spray tends to go all over the place.

Sometimes that takes a long long long long time. In Phoenix, animal control has been reduced to a bare bones department, response time is days sometimes.

I don't know of anything your dog can wear to help protect him/her from a dog bite, but aside from not walking your dog you can try carrying citronella spray or an air horn to deter an aggressively approaching dog.

No matter what the breed, I am always bothered by owners who find it acceptable to let their dogs run loose.

I was thinking about an electric zapper of some sort...

Has anyone here actually used a cattle prod or electric zapper on an attacking dog? What happened?

I prefer to not permanently hurt the attacking dog if possible. The owner's of these dogs are the types to blame all their problems on other people. They also act without considering the consequences. Or in other words I DON'T want to have to carry a gun to protect my dog and then myself from the owner of the dog!

(Note: We are doing what we can about animal control and leash laws. Maybe they will do something in 4 or 5 years?)

I do have an air horn - like for boats. Do those work?

But my that is heavy and bulky to carry around! Maybe get a doggie back-pack and let the dog carry it!

Thinking cap... Maybe a Velcro thing on dog so I could quickly grab it?

Here's a couple of prods that have good ratings. You NEED something that will stop the dogs in their tracks and I think these will do the trick. Read the comments below each product on Amazon to see which one is most recommended by dog owners with similar problems.

Amazon.com: Miller SS-36 "Sabre-six/hot-shot" 36in Stock Prod: Home Improvement

Amazon.com: Stun Gun 7 Million Volt Rechargeable 18" Stun Stick w/LED Flashlight & Holster - LIFETIME WARRANTY: Everything Else

I was thinking something along these lines

Amazon.com : Falcon Safety Super Sound Horn : Boat Horns : Sports & Outdoors

or

Amazon.com: Petsafe Sprayshield Animal Deterrent Spray: Pet Supplies

The simple answer is this...call animal control and file a complaint and stop walking your dogs where you know for a fact there are roaming, unrestrained dogs.
