That dog didn't give his life to save his owner. His owner wasn't the prey. The bear was chasing the dog, and the dog ran to his owner for help, protection, and safety. I don't blame the owner for running off since he couldn't take on a bear, but it's really sad that this dog's life/death is being portrayed differently than what really happened.

The article indicates the bear immediately attacked the dog, which was probably the closest target.
The sad thing is that bears, including a female with cubs, were known to be in the area. Toby's owner took him into the woods without being prepared for a possible bear encounter.

I agree.
Our hounds hunt black bear.
They are always in a pack.
One dog could out run a mad bear......but, not win a fight.
