Got our new mutt a few months ago when she was 3 months old and of course she would chew on everything. She's now 7 months old and she's better and doesn't chew things in the house anymore but when we take her outside she still goes after sticks, mulch, acorns, leaves, pine needles, etc. She's really a great dog overall, though.
We have a fenced in yard but as we try to let her out there to run or potty she just eats stuff. When she does go potty or something she then runs over to the deck area and eats the mulch underneath it. (Not totally sure if she's swallowing or not but I do think she's swallowed some acorns.)
So last night I started working on the "leave it" command with some success.
Anyone else have this problem, and if so, what did you do to fix it? Do any of the smelly spray products work?
My dog does the same thing. I asked the vet once when she started eating pine cones and the vet's answer was "Your dog is a dog. If she doesn't have trouble passing it, let her be a dog". Luckily I moved and there are not many pine cones for her anymore but I also do not have squirrels since all the acorns are hers!

I have a tree that drops hundreds, if not thousands of small limbs, and I live in a windy state; and i have two Mals. And one just loves these twigs, but so far, it has not bothered her at all, and believe me, she has no problem passing turds.
Vet told me it is not a problem as long as they are chewed up and evidently she chews them up...
Our dog does the same thing. She finds bits of wood in the backyard and munches on them. She picks up sticks and acorns on her walks and munches on them. I try to discourage her whenever I can, but I can't always catch her.
We had another dog who, when he was a puppy, ate the bark off of two trees in the backyard, and tore apart a little palm tree, too. He also used to eat weeds, which I didn't mind at all.
He grew out of it, and I'm hoping this puppy will too.
Thanks for the replies. Thankfully we do not have the cocoa mulch at our house - I didn't even know that existed but called my landscaper and he said "I have dogs, too, so we never use that stuff." We have shredded oak bark in our mulch beds.

Be very careful of anything Oak but especially acorns, leaves and water run over oaks. This is a very good link on what types of plants are poisonous to dogs Plants Poisonous to Dogs . Under Oak they have a link to explain why.
I have two pups that are trying to eat acorns from an oak in my fenced back yard. The Vet suggested taking the oak down but that isn't happening! It took me 15 years to grow it where it is and nothing here seems to grow well to begin with! So I not only watch closely and police up the acorns but also will actually pull them from the tree when they are getting ready to fall later in the year.

He used to eat cushions inside the house but I used a spray water bottle and stopped him with one squirt and a NO! It works. Good luck
If the dog is actually eating strange stuff, especially if he eats rocks, go down to the health food store and buy a bottle of ancient seabed minerals. I use Mezzo Trace, but there are several brands available.
Put out a small dish of those pills. Let the dog eat as many as he wants. He'll eat a lot for a few days and then back off and only eat 1-2 a day.
If the dog is using the sticks as chew toys, but not eating them, you need to provide good chewies for the dog that are safer to chew on. if the dog is teething, the dog must chew.

The female, which I raised as a pup, hasn't been a chewer on anything but the twigs in the past two years, and she is four. She used to tear apart those so-called indestructible toys in minutes, but now, she ignores them. It appears her twig chewing has decreased considerably over the winter.
And the male hardly chews on anything other than his biscuits and food.
They do tear apart toys by playing tug-o-war with them.
