Okay... it's an odd subject to talk about. Something happened today and I am ... well, as a first time dog owner, I am clueless so I turn to you guys.

My puppy is 5 months old now. He's a shih-tzu/mix. I think he found himself a gal (a teddy bear). At first he was just playing with it but then he got real excited and started humping the life out of the teddy bear. We were laughing it off because it was quite cute. He went at it for awhile... so then I decided to go check on him, boy I was in for a surprise. His face was completely soaked. I took him into the bathroom and cleaned his face. He got real quiet after the "incident". I also checked the teddy bear and found out one spot on the bear was wet too. I also washed that spot with soap. Puppy did not want to play with us after... he kind of walked himself to his crate and just chill in there alone.

Can a puppy that young has an ejaculation? If he did, how should we react to him afterward? I think he feels ashamed.

Nothing to worry about.
The puppy is just displaying it's dominence.
It is perfectly natural behavior.

I've said this before in the dog forum, but I believe "humping" / mounting behavior in domesticated dogs is one of the most misunderstood, under-studied behaviors in all of canine ethology. If anyone tells you they understand it, ask how they know! Most "information" on the topic is based on guesses and theories that can't be verified.

Is it possible the wetness you felt was urine?

Try not to ascribe human emotions like "shame" to your dog. Dogs absolutely have feelings! But they do not experience shame over bodily functions the way a human might. There is always an explanation for a change in a dog's mood, but owners often "get it wrong" when they anthropomorphize.

My brothers bulldog use to hump a stuffed bulldog toy when he was a puppy and a friends puppy humps a pillow. All normal puppy play. I doubt if your puppy was ashamed but he may have been tired! Keep in mind he is a dog not a human.

The dog we found last month consummated his relationship with my furry throw blanket. It was a big sticky mess. He wasn't ashamed afterwards, dogs don't think of things the way we do. Neutered dogs and female dogs will hump for dominance, I had seen that before but I had never had an unneutered male so I hadn't seen anything like that.

We just got him neutered...he hasn't humped anything since then, but I think he's still kind of sore.

I have read that the newer thoughts on dogs humping is no longer believed to be a dominance display but is just a part of normal play. I think I agree with that it as seems to me that anything a dog does is considered a display of dominance in dogs by some and I just do not think that is so. Even Girle boy Dazzle will sometimes play humping games with his buddies and I really find it a hoot when 5 or 6 of them are humping each other at the same time forming a humping train! BOYS!

At first I thought yhe wetness was from his chewing cause he did try to chew the bear's tail. I apalogize for giving my puppy human's emotion. After reading y'all thoughts I think he was more tired than anything else.

I am glad he found something to play with.

How often do male dogs do this? Should i give him the bear once a week?

It sounds like he is now old enough to be neutered.

Some of the wetness could be drool as I know the bulldog use to be sucking on a piece of his toy as he humped it. He also would lay sleeping for hours and sucked on a mouthful of blanket as he slept and sometimes he was even awake but just laying quietly while he sucked on the blanket with his front paws moving like he was nursing it seemed it was his way of comforting himself and he did that for several years. He is an odd but very funny dog.

as for how often well he could do it when ever he wanted as they did not take his toy away from him so I would say that is up to you.
