There are many breed specific or disability rescues but the rescues that take in old dogs are very special. This man deserves a great deal of credit for his work. Nobody should turn in their dog to a shelter just because the dog is now old. That is when the dog needs its family the most.

Thanks for sharing. What a great story. It always breaks my heart when I see an old dog at a shelter, how can one dump an old friend like that? My dogs are with me for a lifetime and while the end is always very sad I would not miss it for any thing.

There is also Grey Muzzle Organization, which provides grants to various shelters and rescues to use toward a variety of programs geared toward senior dogs.

The Grey Muzzle Organization - Home

If things go well this weekend when I take my two seniors up to MD to meet a bonded pair of senior black lab sisters I'll be adopting them and they will be 10th and 11th senior that I've adopted since 2005. The first was Sam, a golden retriever/great pyr mix but the rest of them have been black lab or bl/mixes.

They are 8 years old, as is Boca the last guy I adopted back in the fall. Hopefully they will be with me for a good number of years. These may very well be the last dogs that I ever adopt due to my own advancing years but I might foster when these are gone if I still can manage the care of a dog. When I go I don't want there to be a bunch of old dogs of mine in need of new homes but it is hard to imagine living without any dogs so that will be my solution.

Love my easy going couch potatoes, even though puppies are so cute and lots of fun for short periods. Foster a litter of 4 or 5 or 8 for a month or more and you quickly get your fill of them for a good long time.

I adopt seniors, because they are so calm and pleasant, so you can have more of them. Yes, their ends do come sooner, but I wouldn't want to have missed knowing them because I didn't want to face their end. I have three 15-year-olds right now and one of them I've had for five years (yes, that's you, Benny!)
