I have a 6-month old puppy of uncertain parentage (looks like hound/Jack Russell) who is about 25 pounds, and has thick fur with an undercoat that has been shedding a lot. He loves being inside and most importantly, with people or other dogs. It is not really an option to keep him outside because there are coyotes in the back yard fairly often. However, the amount of shedding makes it a challenge to keep up with the house cleaning -- my previous dogs have never shedded this much.
Does anyone have suggestions for how to keep the dog happy and reduce the amount of fur that is ending up inside the house?
At 6 moths old hes shedding his Puppy Coat! Brushing him will help.... Then a bath will finish the shedding problem.... But he will shed more right after a bath for a few days.
I highly recommend a robotic vacuum cleaner! I couldn't survive without mine, one of the best inventions ever! I set it for every other day and it keeps all the pet hairs under control.
It could be a puppy coat (if he's losing fuzzy hair and the hair that's coming in is different texture than what he sheds, it's probably that) or he could just be a heavy shedder. If they're a dog that sheds a lot they generally will go through 2 big sheds a year (my GSDs shed their undercoat once in the spring and once in the fall). They shed the entire year but not to the extent they do when they're doing a seasonal shed. Really they only thing that will help is keeping him brushed, feed him a quality food and give him regular baths.
