Most of the states in Australia require dogs to be microchipped. It is usually done when they are puppies, before they go to their new homes.

I always worried about my lab because his chip had moved from the back of his neck to down his leg somewhere.....it required a few swipes over him before it could be found. Not perfect if he did go missing but, as he wasn't really a wanderer, I didn't worry about having him microchipped a second time.

Katies caused her to limp for Months! Then she stopped Next vet visit it moved from her withers ...shoulder to the back about 3 " from the org place! Lady chip never bothered her but when the vet checked hers was also where Katies ended up. When I told the vet Katie limped for months after he put it in he said he was sorry for causing her pain!
BTW she finally stopped limping where that woman stomped on her paw! New Magr gave me her name & number where the old mgr tried to conveince me it was not the same people!! I contacted her she paid in full for the vet bills!
