what would cause this behavior all of a sudden?

The dog is in probably in pain. Take him to the veterinarian right away if this lasts more than 30 min.

Could be poisoned, having a seizure, going into shock, bowel obstruction or lots of other serious things..
Head to the vet instead of waiting for City Data to diagnose...

Vet ASAP.

It could be any number of things including bloat where time is of the essence.

I really hope the OP took this poor dog to get medical attention.

Our little dog was once stung by a bee, and every since, if a fly gets into the house she goes through similar actions. She pants, shakes, runs around the house, and finally goes to an upstairs bedroom until we get rid of the fly. We often don't even know there is a fly until we see her antics, she hears it long before we do...
So it could be serious and something very simple, but don't take chances, start with the vet.
