After studying Artie, I can't say that he looks much like a heeler or cattle dog. I can't say that he looks like any particular mix! The Coventry animal officer told the shelter that was his mix. He has some faint spots under his white fur, and he does point in the yard at animals and sounds. I think he's a classic all-American mutt. His head coloring and markings are somewhat aussie shepherd looking. He also howls more than barks.
He's a great dog.
As for the older dogs adopted, they show so much gratitude at living their older years in comfort and safety. I'd adopt a dog even if he had one day left. It would be worth the satisfaction.
I adopted Ezra, a 14-yaer-old cattle dog mix two years ago from Old Friends, at Best Friends. I figured he's be a short-timer, but the thought of this gallant senior not having a home was too difficult.
Well, here it is, 2+ years, and he's still going strong. He's outlived two dogs, and outlasted another. He's been a joy and delight to me since his first day here. He still herds the others and steals food, and suffers only a stiff right hind leg. Yes, I know he'll be here a shorter time than a younger dog, but I love having him.
You get kind of zen Buddhist around older animals. Enjoy and pay attention in the present. The Old Friends residences at Best Friends are a special kind of holy place to me.
Sounds like Artie and Ezra have both found their retirement homes. We have adopted 3 senior dogs and they are so much easier than puppies or even my other senior dogs we've had since puppyhood. They adapted quickly, are very loyal and grateful.
I wish everyone could experience the joy of adopting a senior.

"Retirement home"....I love that! So fitting for the seniors...and they are the best, I'd love to have an elder sanctuary...such special animals.
