Insurance companies have charts about how much a person is worth...........male/female.......age.......earning capacity.

But, not medical costs.

This will be a tuff one to come up with a number.

Legally, yes, A dog is property and is "owned."

However, the "legal" answer doesn't come close to identifying the moral obligation one assumes for the welfare of a living, feeling, being that is dependent on you for their care and safety.

Nor does the "legal" answer address the very real emotion bond most people have with their dogs (and cats).

Legally, they are property. However, need to ask, if they are just property, then why are people convicted of animal cruelty. I can abuse my personal property all I want. I can take a hatched to my TV, my home theater and it is not illegal because it is only MY property.

I really like my TV, but if it breaks I just get another one and forget about it the minute a new one is turned on.

Can't do that with a dog. Yes you can get a new one, but you can never replace one!

Dogs are living breathing animals; so are we! They are treated by the majority of the people as part of the family. The courts have to make some determination on the status of a dog (and probably a cat too).

They probably signed papers at the kennel stating that the kennel will not not be liable financially or otherwise, for anything. This is hard because if the kennel paid/pays anything towards that bill then it shows they felt they were in part at fault. Tough one.
