There have been quite a few cases of police dogs left in cars lately, and I always wonder how it could possibly happen. But this case is absolutely mind-boggling: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...-dog-was-dead/

The dog was in the car for 36 hours. I don't understand how you could forget about a dog for that long, jsut because they need to be walked and fed and you're habituated to keep track of that when you have a dog and spend most of your time with it. I can't even begin to understand how this happened. My dogs are never far from my thoughts. If they're not lying at my feet while I work, I'm out and about in the world and my thoughts frequently touch on them as I wonder how they're doing and what they're up to.

I actually understand far more easily how people can accidentally leave children in the car for a few hours than I can these stories of working dogs left in cop cars. Kids sleep and you can just take that for granted, but a police dog must be monitored in a far different style than a child.

36 hours in a car - how could this guy not even once think about his dog during that time?

I don't get it either. It's such a sad thing that happened. That poor, poor dog. How they must suffer before dying a horrible death.

This makes no sense. This dog lived with its handler. How did the handler not realize the dog wasn't at home with him?
The officer was fired and rightfully so.
There has to be more to this.
Horribly sad. Poor poor dog.

All K9 handlers, military or police, who through negligence or carelessness allow their dogs to die, should be discharged or fired and never be allowed to wear a uniform again.
