Dogs give off clues when they are in stress:

Panting and salivating
Pacing
Shedding
Diarrhea/ bowel movements
Inappropriate urination
Licking the lips
Coughing
Sneezing
Dilated pupils
Trembling
Shaking (as if the animal were shaking off water)
Yawning
Whining, excessive vocalizing
Nipping
Growling when approached to be handled
Sweaty paws(leaving sweaty paw prints on the floor)
Increased or decreased activity
Excessive scratching or licking repeatedly
‘Spacing out’ by turning away or avoiding eye contact
Loss of appetite
Hiding behind the handler
Hiding under furniture
Love ya, girl.

OR just don't push your dog if its wrath has no off switch.

I mean, come on.

Some dogs will show signs of stress and do nothing all day...or maybe you'll eventually get a "get away from me" nip.

But a dog that chases you down to maul you has gone beyond stress defense.

This conversation reminds me of the Dog Whisperer episode where Cesar was disciplining a dog ( pitty?)- not trying to dress it - and over and over again the dog was telling him he simply did not want to be in that situation and was losing patience with Cesar. "Suddenly" the dog lunged and took a hunk out of Cesar and Cesar really got rough with him then.

Somebody put the tape in slow motion and counted all the various ways the dog was telling Cesar how unhappy and stressed it was until he finally lost it. I think this is about the time Cesar's reputation was blown to hell and his empire and reputation came tumbling down. Everybody should learn how to properly handle a dog.

^^ this absolutely. Idiot.... Push any dog, after they have given a warning... NOT saying it was ok for the dog to freak out. Or that the dog was stable and they push d it to the brink. But the dog didn't lose it for no reason that day.

The dog in the story didn't go off out of the blue. The owners were idiots, starting with having a dog living in the backyard... and then one day deciding to dress it... sigh

Too many things left out in the story. And talk about missing a learning experience that would have been perfect that reality tv show
