My dachshund will run along side of us if we are out in the yard, and we’ve been working on getting him to go on short walks around the block on a leash, but he gets about 3 houses away and lies down and rolls over.
It is not very hot out yet, so it’s not the heat from the pavement, it is also not discomfort, because he has a harness that doesn’t hurt his neck. Dad has ample treats for bribery, but even that doesn’t work.
He will walk on a leash long enough to go potty at a rest stop, but he just won’t go on walks.
Carry him, or drive him a couple blocks away from home and have him walk towards home. Also carry or drive him to interesting places and walk him there.
Very often if you are in a strange place and walk away, a pup will be quick to follow you, and there he is: walking on a leash
My dachshund that I got as a puppy started out okay learning leash walking, and then got a sand burr stuck in her paw mid-walk once (we were stationed on the Florida coast) and would refuse walks after that. It wasn't till she was about five months old and we got back to the midwest and were reunited with our older dog that she started leash walking again. She needed a boss dog to model it for her. Once around the block with our senior dog, and she was flawless.
Lol, I have an opposite problem - one of my Schnoodles will only poop when on a leash. Nope, not in the back yard, never in the house, even when boarding overnight, I must arrange for walks. He's such a creature of habit.

Haha. We’d be in big trouble. Ours has a doggie door and a fenced yard, so he goes out whenever he needs to take care of business...or bark at nothing, or chase a squirrel, etc. it’s not necessary for his life to be on a leash, but it’s more our idea.

So your dog isn’t hurt if he will run in yard
Put leash on in yard

This is hilarious and reminds me of my doodle (50% mini poodle / 25% Jack Russell / 24% "super mutt" per the DNA test) who refused to ever poop in our yard. I took advantage of a move to a new house and did not walk him for about a week - he had to get used to doing all aspects of his business in our yard before I walked him in the new neighborhood. It worked, and he has broken that habit, but I don't know how long it would have taken outside of the opportunity of the new house.
