You need to do the treatment and do exactly what they tell you. IF you do something that kills all the hws quickly you risk them dying and clogging the heart/lungs. You need a controlled kill and the dog needs to be controlled/rested period, as stated above. The treatment they do nowadays is nowhere as bad as what they went through 20 years ago.

Heartworms are something you can prevent. Don't let it happen again.

Did he have the three injections? Mine just had her last two treatments a week ago today. Have been keeping her crated 24/7 and she is good with staying in the crate. How much longer does she need crate time. I would say another 3 weeks for a total of 8 or it depends on how she is doing? She does get very excited everytime I let her out of the crate to go wee outside. She tries to jump all the time and she is big and sometimes hard to control, but otherwise she is doing good. She had nosebleeds with the first injection but knock on wood those stopped!

I think he had only one injection, maybe two, but he is a small dog (12.6 pounds), and didn't have to stay in a crate. He was restricted to no running, jumping, or playing for two or three weeks.
I would follow the vet's directions closely. Should be successful.
