Another observation:

When walking our dog, he likes to smell certain areas in the different yards. This can take 30 seconds to a minute. You think he wants to mark the area, but then he walks off.

Do you observe your dog just analyzing various areas in the neighborhood?

Sometimes he licks the pole or grass which really kind of grosses me out.

That sounds like normal dog behavior. Dogs can learn alot by a scent. Like who left it and what he/she has been up too. We call it reading their " PEE-MAIL"

It is even funnier when my two are sniffing the same place then as they walk away they nudge one another like they are discussing what they just " read"..too funny!

Dogs can tell age, sex, and pack rank of another dog by the scent of their urine (smell)...if I am not mistaken. Our two dogs will do this too. This is very normal dog bx IMO.

My two do exactly the same thing, and if one sniffs the other will come over and join the party. They like to see who else has been around the block...
