This happened to me recently.

I needed to go into a Quik Shop and my dog was with me.

She is a pretty good dog (a standard poodle) and very mindful of my commands. I parked and rolled the windows down half way and opened the sun roof. She was laying down in the back seat and was quite comfortable. She responds to both verbal and hand commands. I could see her pretty black eyes peeking at me through the seats as I backed up towards the curb, I gave her the hand sign for 'down' and reinforced it with a stern "stay". I said; "stay, stay!"

A very pretty blond woman in the car next to me said, "Why don't you just put it in 'Park'?

I think people have recently been freaking out about this--due to media attention/social media and talk of dogs and children dying in cars. I understand people's concern but the other evening I came back to two nasty notes on my car that the police had been called and it was about 72 degrees and night and falling (no sun!) and windows down an inch or two--upon getting in the car there was none of that "boy it's warm in here" feeling--it was just perfect. I had notes about how horrible I am and that I was making my dogs suffer.
I care about my dogs more than most people--it's ridiculous to jump to conclusions--people should take into consideration the temperature, time of day etc.

My dogs stay in our 85 degree sunroom every day all day and never have any problems (they're used to it and do not pant)

It really gets me that people don't realize that dogs love going for rides and love getting away from the monotony of being left alone at home all the time, mine do a little dance all the way to the car, they love going for a ride and especially to the doggy park. I traveled across the country with mine and WE slept in the car many times. The car actually stays cooler longer with the windows not cracked and I run my ac full blast right before I get out or go to sleep, when you open the windows the outsde heat gets in, tinted windows are a big factor in keeping the car cooler longer also. I kept the windows up for safety when I'm traveling and sleeping in my car. If you leave the windows cracked you chance someone stealing your dog too. So before you judge us, go traveling with your dog in 55 degree and below weather, it's really not as bad as you think. My oldest dog is 11 yrs old and I have never seen him painting when I leave him for 5 to 15 min. with the windows up, (remember I said I have tinted windows and keep the windows up after I ran the ac full blast to keep it cooler longer and that's only if it's above 55°).
