This morning, my dog was panting very hard, and definitely not due to weather. He jumped up on our bed, and I awoke when I heard him breathing rapidly and audibly in and out of his nose, continuing for about a full minute. This frightened me, but the odd nose-breathing ceased and he seemed restful again.

Now, he is relaxing on the sofa, but won't eat and seems to be very rundown. Anyone recognize these symptoms, particularly the breathing issue? Hopefully, it's nothing serious, perhaps just a run-of-the-mill cold or stomach ache. My SO suggested that perhaps he has asthma. Is this common for dogs? He is six years old, and has never had breathing problems before. Has anyone encountered this?

Incidentally, he snapped at a neighbor who pet him when I took him for a walk this morning. Since he is such a "people dog," I know something is wrong.

I looked up labored breathing in my Vet. book. It could be any number of things....some of them were scarey! Does he have any other symptoms? Causes ranged from heart problems to heart worm. I think I would see a vet...but that is JMO. By his snapping...which sounds like it is not characteristic...he he stilling you something is not right. Keep us posted.

If it happens next time, maybe you should give him some Benadryl liquid. Dogs can handle a lot of that for their size, something like a whole pill per 30 lbs every 12 hours. You'd have to convert that for the faster-acting liquid.

This exact same thing happened to my dog and it turns out she got stung by a wasp. The membranes inside her mouth & throat inflamed, causing it to close and make it hard to breathe. The vet gave her a shot to relieve it and put her on Benadryl for a few days.

Holly,

I had an older dog (8 year old Boykin Spaniel) develop a severe ear infection a number of years ago. Your post rang a bell because she became very intolerant of anyone touching her head and would breathe through her nose like she was trying to clear phlegm in the back of her throat. Just a thought. I hope your dog is alright.

I agree you should check it out with your vet...hopefully it's just something allergy related, but it's always better to be safe than sorry! I hope he's okay, keep us posted!!!
