I guess by this rational , I would have to say I would only save a good person from a train vs. a bad one, like the bad kind of people who make horrible assumptions about pit bulls.

My hubby was out walking our 2 dogs off leash. Our pup was about 4 months old, my old guy was about 13. My old guy decided to run out onto the ice (diversion channel in town) to chase some ducks - fell through the ice. Hubby ran after the old guy while our son held onto the pup, stretched out flat on his belly on the ice and scooted out to my dog, grabbed him by the collar and drug him out of the water. Hubby told me later that he knew he could never let our old guy drown.
Yes, I absolutely would save my dog from the train. Instinct and a mother's heart would let me do no less for any member of my family, furry or not.
i don't think your question is stupid or facetious at all, although i don't know where it is coming from OR what prior post you all are fighting about.
i will say this, i don't think i would have a choice...in the past, when my 12-year old shih tzu has been in danger, i could no more NOT have tried to save him than i could have grown wings and flown away.
for example, i have picked him up in the middle of a dog fight when the other dog stood to my hips and ended up standing with her paws on my shoulders biting my ponytail.
intellectually, i know how seriously stupid these things were and i would caution other dog owners NEVER to do them, but, when push came to shove, it wasn't a matter of thinking it through...it was a matter of instinctive action because my doggy child was in danger.
so, i would say: if i saw him standing on train tracks and a train coming, there'd be no internal debate about the wisdom or consequences of going after him, i would just absolutely be driven to do it.
My dog decided to play with a moose calf one winter day a couple of years ago. The mother was not amused. The dog refused to come in the house when I called; the only thing I could do was start the truck and make him think we were going for a ride. The moose might have killed both of us if I had flung myself onto the path of her maternal rage.

Sure, there probably are nice pit bulls, but my default opinion of them is very negative, they are banned from many countries for a reason. Breeders should simply stop breeding those dogs, let them disappear from the face of the earth.
With humans I don't have that problem, so I guess I would save any human, just to be on the safe side as far as my own conscience is concerned. It would become more difficult if I knew that the person in danger were let's say a child killer or abuser. Why would the world benefit from the survival of the more evil one of two people?
metla -- you're talking about a different scenario there with different variables, including timing, forced paths, etc. you had options...with a train, you don't have any.
okay...i was wondering if we should go down that path about what we would do in that scenario...
i think it is interesting, though, that the going for a ride trick worked and got your buddy out of that scenario...i have had to use that exact trick on my little guy before when he has slipped out of the house...and also the "do you want a treat?" trick.
Tried that one with the moose calf scenario--did not work. Guess he thought the moose calf was a better treat.
