Eek! I wouldn't recommend using a Qtip! I was always told by vets to never put a Qtip in a dogs ear. Even being super gentle, I've heard stories of people hurting their dog because they accidently went too far.

Cotton balls are better. Wet it with warm water and squeeze all the water out, then put in in the ear and gently swab to try to clean out any gunk. Cotton balls are good because they wont let you accidently go too far.

And if you don't have the money to visit one, you can always try calling a vet. Tell them you aren't sure if it's something serious enough to bring your dog in for, but describe what you are seeing and ask if they think it's something serious or if you can get rid of it yourself. You might need to call a couple, because some won't give advice over the phone. Many do, though, and they will tell you if it sounds like something more serious or if you can just use a home or petstore remedy.

Default Black stuff in dog's ear

It is dangerous for you to try to clean the dog's ear out on your own...try to figure out a way to get the dog to the vet. Our dog had this black stuff in both her ears and it is indeed a yeast infection of some kind. The vet told us to not try to clean the ears out because we would not be too certain how far to put the Q tip in the dog's ear and could cause damage. This black stuff or yeast infection happens to dogs whose ears are floppy, bent over, large, etc...they don't get much air.

Please don't try to clean them yourself. Most vets have some kind of payment plan you can get on with them...or use a credit card but don't try to fix this one yourself.

need to do was get ear drops, you don't need this also from the vet. place them in the ears, and the yuck goes away! I am not a vet, but if you look at dr foster, they do have people that may help,
and get you the ear drops! If the dog does have floped ears, that may be why. Get the good ear drops, and try that. Dr Foster can maybe help with the problem! If it works you don't pay the vet fee. But get good drops, not cheap! Maybe peroxide, and a cotton ball? Be real caution with the long one!
I think the bottle ear clean to clear it up is you best bet! You just squirt the meds into the ear canal, and follow what it does say. Google Dr Foster! Then they have a dr. you may speak to. However, take care of it now!

This is not sound advice. To treat effectively and prevent more harm, you need to know WHAT you're treating. Antibiotics don't treat fungi and antifungal medications don't treat bacterial infections.

You need to take your dog to the vet to get a diagnosis first, before you start on any over-the-counter treatments. It might be simple but it could be serious. You won't know until you get a diagnosis - FROM A VET.

And just so you know: it's physically IMPOSSIBLE to go "too far" in a dog's ear with a cotton swab. The ear canal makes a 90 degree turn to get to the eardrum, and, unless your swab can go around a 90 degree turn, you cannot hurt your dog's ears.

If it has no odor it is not a yeast infection.

Nope, that's not true!!! There are many, MANY bacterial infections that have characteristic odors.

Mea culpa, you're correct - she DID state it has no odor. But that still doesn't rule out a yeast infection. May not smell awful frequently, they can emanate an odor. I'd still have it checked by a vet.

Our dog had this 2 times since November. Both times it was an ear infection. We have drops again for flushing. (from vet).

It's so hard to get it done by myself (hubby says he will help but he hardly does).

The stuff we use it Keto flush.

Thanks everyone for all of your help. I understand the people who say that if you can't afford to take the dog to the vet than you don't need to keep the dog. I have had him since he was 6 weeks old and he will be 10 years old in October. I was in a car accident 2 years ago and have been unable to work since then. All of my bills are suffering right now. I am not going to get rid of my dog because of hard times. I know he needs to go to the vet, but I was looking for something to do until I can get a couple of hundred dollars to take him. I love my dog and don't want to see him suffer. I will do whatever I have to do to help him.
