I recently moved and was delighted to find that my new community is dog friendly. Dogs are allowed on the beach, the township provides a dog park, and the license fee is only $5. My dog loves it here and I am also enjoying myself. The township only asks common sense rules be adhered to, like, no nuisance barking, all dogs must be kept on a leash, pick up the waste, and register your dog. Within a week of being here I had to deal with a nuisance barking problem that the township handled quickly and effectively. After a month I have seen so many violations I have begun to wonder if anyone abides by the pet laws besides myself. They have a fenced and tree shaded dog park with running water, for free, and what do I find, several dog piles even with the rules posted and waste containers nearby. I went to the beach one day and my small dog was mauled by a 60-80 pound dog running off the leash. I had to help the young lady to control the dog and to get her leash attached. I have seen a few pit bulls running free, one german shepherd, and one person throwing a frisbee to a pit bull. Many different dogs running loose on the beach of all sizes.
The township has posted signs with the rules everywhere and the only people that cannot know the rules probably can't read, are brain dead, or so ignorant they don't care. If this continues I am sure that this dog friendly township will reverse it's position and dogs will be severely restricted or banned completely. Once again, it seems to prove the point that dogs are ok, it's the owners that are the problem.

Your new community sounds great but like you, I'd be hesitant b/c of the owners' lack of responsibility for their dogs. I'd probably stick to dog parks where there are small dog areas but it doesn't seem fair that my dogs would have to be limited b/c of other owners'. I wonder if you could go to meetup.com and find small dog groups (or even small purebred dog groups) that meet every month in your area (put in your zip and breed), that might be fun (and more relaxed for everyone b/c they're sometimes held in people's backyards in the nice weather). Sometimes I think our social life revolves around our dogs, LOL!

"The township only asks common sense rules be adhered to."

There in lies the problem. Your township takes for granted that people have and use common sense! Add that with the "ME generation", a
generation, who thinks rules only apply to others and not themselves. In this case...those few idiots who can't comply, will ruin it for all the others.
