My dog was vaccinatd for giardia less than a year ago. On Friday, he was diagnosed with giarida. After arguing with the doctor for what seemed like hours, he finally admitted that he never gives his dog the giardia vaccine because it's worthless and just lowers their immunity, while not really protecting against anything. I keep my dog on a very limited vaccine schedule for this very reason. To all those who don't want to kill your pets with these toxins, check out www.critteradvocacy.org. Tons of great info on vaccines and which ones are worthless. The studies supporting the use of vaccines are funded by the pharmaceutical companies that supply them. Think about that!

Haven't read through the whole thread, but...from what I've read / heard this is the canine equivalent of the common cold. Yes, it goes around, but a healthy dog will be able to fight it off without medical help. The ones at risk of complications are dogs with compromised immune systems - very young puppies, dogs recovering from surgery or another illness, or under a great deal of stress. Just like with humans, stress weakens the immune system, which is why "kennel cough" is so common in boarding facilities and shelters. I personally wouldn't vaccinate for this at all (at least not for a healthy dog) and find it irritating that many training classes require it. Then again, I'm not about to go get myself a flu shot, either.

I'm curious, how often do adult dogs contract parvo? I only ever hear about puppies getting it, and I'm talking about in the shelter, too. Anybody know?

It's a lot more common in puppies of course, but we had an outbreak of parvo in adult dogs at the last place I worked. I don't know if it was a slightly different strain or what, but it sure was scary! I spread my pets' vaccines out quite a bit, but parvo is one of those that we don't mess with.

Are there any environmental factors that increase the risk for Parvo? Man, I need to research this LOL, I know nothing about it. But I probably should.

i know that it is a viral infection ...... like the flu or a rhinovirus (cold virus) for humans, so BELIEVE they must be exposed to another infected dog or its secretions to contract it..... could be wrong and hope someone will correct me if i am........

You're pretty much right. The only thing I would add is that parvo is really hard to get rid of once it's in the environment. It hangs out forever in yards, on bedding, just about anywhere you haven't bleached the heck out of.
It's one of those diseases that causes much cursing behind the closed doors of a vet clinic because it can be very difficult (and expensive) to treat, it makes the dogs miserable and it's generally very easy to prevent with a shot.

He's much better, thanks for asking! We caught it early enough so he didn't get a chance to get too sick!
