I bought a medium sized doggie carrier similar to this Iris Usa Air Travel Pet Carrier Airline FAA Approved Size Small and I keep my box in it. I did not screw the top on so I just lift the top off by the handle to clean. I have the opening facing the wall (minus the door) so the cat can get in & out but the dog can not. Another bonus to this is that my litter flinging cat is no longer making a mess out of the floor.
Great suggestions. Will do some type of enclosure for each box. It will also give Miss Kitty privacy from young Dillon kitten who wants to sit and watch her potty!
There is a new product, just on the market, that solves that problem, along with other problems that involve separating animals from one another's food. Go to MeowSpace Home for more information.
I would sprinkle a little cayenne pepper on the fresh cat poop and leave it there. After once or twice of eating hot poop I don't think it will sound so good anymore.
A friend didn't have a dog, but to resolve the litter being flung and the eyesore/smell, they built a little room. They cut a hole in the wall between their kitchen and garage, and installed a pet door. They built a bin inside the garage which could be accessed through the pet door, and put the litter box inside. The lid of the bin has hinges so the box can be changed easily.

Victoria Stillwell says to feed dogs pineapple because it makes their poop taste bad, I don't know if pineapple is cat safe though.
I've tried pineapple in the dogs' food for awhile...my (dog)poop eating dog is not deterred....
apparently she doesn't care if the poop tastes like $&!#
