Ok, my brother in law found a stray Great Dane/ Mastiff mix dog and his parents wouldn't let him keep it at the house while he looked for the owner so he brought it to us to watch. They have been looking for the owner, they have his name and the dogs name but haven't been able to find him, the closest no kill shelter is a county over and they don't have room right now for such a big dog. I don't want to take it to the pound b/c they might kill it, they only give them 3 days here my brother in law said. However, the dog is kind of interfering with my dogs b/c they can't use their backyard b/c he is out there. I know Great Danes aren't suppose to stay outside but I'm just watching it till something is done, it's either that or off to the pound. Anyways, how long do I give my brother in law to locate the owner before I take this dog somewhere? He is a cop, seems like he could find him, but I guess it's not that easy. Another week?
we even found their old vet! the dog has tags, it's from KY but we don't know if this guy moved here or was just vacationing but the phone # the vet had is old, we do have the guys name though
not even a week, but the longer the dog stays, the less my brother in law will look for the owner probably and the more attached my husband will get to it, yea that's what I'm wondering, maybe that was the owner and he just said it wasn't his dog b/c he didn't want it back, but why not just say that????? I don't know! I would hate to turn the dog over and then someone is out there looking for it but we really can't take in another dog, just kind of got dumped over here but my husband was home and I wasn't and he gave the OK, he's got a big heart that can't say no even if it is better to.
I'm guessing the dog was dumped. If you can't keep it, place an ad to re-home it, but very thoroughly screen every person that calls. Call vets, neighbors, friends, whatever you can to ensure these are good people. And if no one calls that can get a good reference, please keep in mind being euth'd - while terrible and horribly sad - isn't the worse thing that can happen to an animal.
What about calling the vet & seeing if they know the owner & MAYBE they will take the dog you might have to drive him there. Hope its not far LOL 30 yrs ago I rescued a dog at the local pound she had collar & tag.
