Doxies are the sweetest dogs, EVER! I have a Doxie mix named Beesley

I've heard they tend to be yappy, but mine isn't at all.

I've always been told to watch his weight, since their bodies are so long, it's common to have spinal problems.

Here's my little booger:

My friend has two, a male and a female. They are very barky, but she's able to control them well. Besides being the most adorable little pups ever, they have really cool personalities. They both love the water and riding in the stroller. My Bulldog adores them and even though they're small, they play very well with the big dogs!

I know they are prone to certain health issues, like any breed, and are very prone to spinal injuries if not handled properly. I'm not sure which you're looking at, but there are smooth, wirehaired and long-haired ones. Here's some information regarding breed standards.

American Kennel Club - Dachshund

And some general information about their personality. Shyness is a fault with this breed, so you are very likely to get a spunky, friendly dog! I've never met a shy dachshund!

That dachsund is adorable! Jumping on/off furniture should probably be discouraged b/c of possible back problems, keeping them lean like MA said is very important too (actually for any dog, better for their joints, breathing, mobility etc).

Well firstly they were bred as badger dogs in germany a few hundred years ago so they are muscular and low to the ground. They come in miniature(around 11 pounds) and standard(16 to 35 pounds). They can be very affectionate but can also be very territorial. As with all dogs its not the breed, its the training that makes the difference as to wether or not they will fit in with you and your family. If you are considering a dachshund because its a small dog, you may also consider shihtzu

thanks for the replies! we are already calling the new pup 'fierce badger hunter', lol. we havent had much luck with rescue sites yet, but we are patient. there dont seem to be many (any) in our area. we also have a boxer so the dachshund would have to like big dogs. my husband likes long haired or smooth, any color really. i saw an isabella and tan on a rescue site yesterday and fell in love!

My sister has had two, in succession. I liked both of them, they are great dogs but like everything they aren't perfect. The hound in them can make some of them less reliably potty trained than some dogs, especially in cold weather because they don't like cold (they seem to like sleeping under the covers). They can be less biddable than many other breeds (so controlling their yap or any other bad habits like chasing things can be an issue).
