So Ive been "talking" to other Duluthians who are are painting a very bleak picture of the local economy/job market. Particularly for blue collar jobs. As much as I love this area we cant very well be there unemployed

So Im going to start calling area companies and feeling that out. Hope I hear somthing positive.

Default Back to the main point

I think we can get back on track and help this girl feel good about her decision. I want you to know that you will love Duluth. It is a lot like Maine, and I've spent a lot of time at both. I grew up in Duluth, my husband is from Boston, and my best friend lives in Maine. I've moved 15 times in my life all over the country and I can tell you there are very few cities that are as beautiful as Duluth. Like one of the other writers said, it will take your breath away. My family still lives there (I live in Minneapolis because my husband is a big city kind of guy) but I travel up to Duluth 10-12 times a year. Canal Park is the highlight of the city and has been totally revamped as a touristy point, but it isn't like the cookie cutter ones you see in every other tourist town in the country. It's unique. The Ariel Lift Bridge is very origional and watching the ore boats come in is so fun. There are a million nature trails and parks that are very well kept up. the colors in the fall are to die for. If you are an outdoorsy person you could not find a better place. The people here are known for being hard core because the winters can be tough, but guess what, everyone there loves them. Just get yourself a good snowsuit and a pair of Sorrel's and you're set. I grew up in a lake house and got the full effect of the Canadian winds coming across Lake Superior and I found it magical. I used to sit up on my roof wrapped up in a sleeping bag and watch the storm clouds roll in from probably hundreds of miles away. You can get that view from just about anywhere in the city.

The town used to be industrial so there are ghosts from that still remaining. The new lean is towards tourism, so the places that get visited more often get the most attention with sprucing up. The city is actually going bankrupt, so that can sound discouraging, but the cost of living is super low, too so I think it kind of evens out. I would start with renting and explore the neighborhoods. Duluth is really skinny and really long, stretching up the North Shore, dotted with cute small towns like Two Harbors. The school system is rotten in Duluth right now because Central High School is closing. The students have to merge into Denfeld and East, which I've heard is crowded. You'd probably have better schooling out of the city. There is a private school also, Marshall. There are 2 main hospitals, St. Luke's and St. Mary's. St. Mary's has more of a presence in the city, and I have family and friends that work there.

I have family in Cloquet, which is kind of nice, but I think the economy is worse than Duluth. Also the Black Bear Casino is there. Good job opportunities if you're not a gamblaholic. I grew up in west end Duluth, more blue collar and what might be considered more run down. East end is more high end with more queen victorians and renovations. Don't look at houses downtown. Just over the hill you can find acreage and new builds. Superior, WI is right across the bridge with some nice housing options in Billings Park, and it looks at the beautiful Duluth hillside, so nice view. You can also easily see Spirit Mountain ski hill, which is a lot of fun with some decent "hill" skiing, and activities for the summer as well. My dad works there. And at Enger golf course in the summer; one of the hilliest golf courses I've ever been on.

Anyway, I think you'll be happy moving to Duluth. I know I loved living there. I give it a thumbs up!

iv lived here 2 years and cant wait to leave. run down? YES. terrible streets, seems like every other store is closed and falling apart in the down town. There is a big population of white methhead types as well as obese people. aside from like two places, there are no good resurants. you have to drive everywhere in stead of walk and if you want pretty much anything, you have to go to the mall area. The lake and northshore are the best but Duluth is, im sorry to say, a dump.

Wow, two years in Duluth and you only found two good restaurants? I was there for a week at a time in 05 and 06 and found more enjoyable places to eat than that! Roads? I can live with 'em. Many of the roads in my home town are as bad. Never notice many "meth-heads" and there didn't appear to be any greater percentage of obese people than most parts of the country.

What do you get in Duluth? Great scenery, abundant outdoor recreation opportunities, creeks/parks/hiking close at hand,a city with a lot to offer young families, everything you may need, nothing you don't, and what seemed like a strong sense of community when I was there to look into a business opportunity. I'd love to be in Duluth. It definitely doesn't qualify as a dump in my book, and I've seen a pretty fair share of the country.

@pkldhering-thank you so much for all the information and encouraging words. I had quit looking at this sight a long time ago or I would have thanked you sooner.
I'm still debating the move and hope at some point I can get the extra push to do it. MY husband was excepted into out local carpenters apprenticeship and this can be transferred to a union in MN. Question is the demand for this there.
Anyways, thanks for the time and positive thinking
