Tenant improvements to an existing recreational facility in Duluth. Schematic plans call for the remodel and renovation of an existing recreational facility to include additional youth and teen program areas, additional exercise areas and equipment for group fitness, expansion of the strength training and cardiovascular centers, a remodeled lobby area, renovation of locker rooms, additional special needs and family locker rooms, and a skywalk that will connect the facility to the nearby downtown business district.

Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2009. No inquiries are requested at this time.
Anyone know where that bid is for?

They have been for quite some time. They've already started with their lobby. They're going to be remodeling the front entrance area as well as moving inside sections around (and remodeling locker rooms, YAY). The Y will also be getting a skywalk connection.

I don't know many details about it. It was in the paper and on the news quite a bit a few months ago. Not sure about front entrance work, except that the main goal is to make it "friendlier" and better lit. I'm particularly excited about the skywalk connection (especially if the company I work for moves downtown). I'm sure the YMCA was a first class facility when it was built (and it still is honestly, pretty decent), but it definitely has a dated feel. Let's hope this renovation brings it up to spec.

As many people already know, the new Menards store in Hermantown opened yesterday. I went there today and all I have to say is it is huge! Its 230,000 square feet. It has the exact same floor place as the West End store, but this one is a little bigger and also features a small grocery section and pet section. I wasnt sure what those two sections were like but when I saw them I was pleasently surprised! The grocery section carrys a lot of every day food items and many major brands. The pet section has a ton of dog and cat stuff and also bird stuff. It seems almost as if they have just as much dog stuff as Petco. I know the Menards pet sections has a ton of different treats and toys for dogs. The new store is so big its almost overwhelming. I do not like how they labeled each section that buffers the outer wall in green neon lighting! How dated is that! It already is out of date and it makes those areas not look very new. Other than that issue the store is awesome! Its extremely nice and features every home improvement item you can imagine! Plus it smells new!

Im not sure if anyone is following the proposed change in zoning for a site next to Kohls on Sunby Road from R1 Residential to C5 Commercial, but I am. I have read many things about the developers plans and how they would like to build a 145,000 square foot retail development on the proposed land that they would like a zoning change to be made on. Well I read on saw that the planning comission has denied their proposal saying that it does not meet the zoning comprehensive plan for the area and that also there are other areas in the Miller Hill Mall area for retail development. This about made me lose my mind. These people on the planning commission are not the right people for the job. What in the world would make them deny a development like this. The developers are even looking at making it LEED Certified. The commissioners need to realize that there is not anywhere else in the Miller Hill Mall area to build a 145,000 square foot development like the one proposed! The city wants to attract businesses and wants to become a flourishing city. Then I suggest you do not deny a retail development that would not only add more retail to the city like the city wants, but it would also add jobs. If the city council denys the zoning change I will be extremely furious. This is the time where I am ready to pack my bags and leave Duluth, these kinds of stupid decisions are why this city is dying. Notice how retail developments are flourishing in Hermantown, what is denied in Duluth will go to Hermantown and the benefits will all be lost for the city of Duluth. Just had to get my anger out

duluthian2008 I fully agree with what you are saying about the planning commission in this city. They are all a bunch of idiots and need to find a new job. We need all the development we can get and this is a great location. I dont understand this at all and it also makes me want to pack my bags and go.
