Cash is King is the only saying I like from that right wing christian right zealot Dave Ramsey. Anyway, I learned the hard way and use cash, cash, cash!!!!
The fact that you were unable to use a credit card without racking up debt does not mean "cash is king." Your argument would be similar to saying pencil and paper is the only way to solve math problems because you can't figure out how to use a calculator and keep getting the wrong answer.
and the cashier thought I had given her $25 instead of two $20s for an approximately $23 purchase. I caught it, but just because she was saying what my change would be instead of just handing it to me.
Your bank account can get hacked even if you don't use it ala credit cards etc. It happens all the time.
If you don't use credit or debit cards, then you need to carry cash. People get robbed for their cash too. You go into the store, get out the cash and someone is watching you, guaranteed.
While I am in the mindset of using cc in an emergency ONLY, I understand this can be very complicated. Purchasing items from a store like Michael's is a far can from emergencies, but if carrying money is a chore, cc are the best choice. If your cc is stolen, it is a breeze to report to the company. A debit card on the other hand is a whole different situation.
When Target was experiencing their hack, the cc company was very proactive with me and my old account was closed and I was issued another one.
I think some people dislike the idea of carrying cash because it makes them feel more of a target for crimes.
Is the risk of carrying cash really that high? Over the past thirty years, my credit card has been skimmed multiple times, but I have never had cash stolen. Ever.
If you think about it, carrying cash around is dirty. This is why I dislike changes. No.. I am not a germs freak. Just consider the number of places that a circulated paper or coin currency has gone through.
Yes there are better fraud protection options on cc than debit
Of course because that's the bank's money, not yours so they will surely go to greater extremes to make sure they are protected.
That's why I use a CC for purchases.
And my CC was compromised (someone tried to buy $5K worth of airline tickets).
Bank cancelled my card and issued a new one.
The guy on the phone said my money was safe and I laughed and said it wasn't my money on the CC but their money He laughed back and agreed.

When your card was skimmed, did you end up out of pocket for anything?
You may not have had cash stolen, but how often do you think you've lost money? Even if it's nothing more than just the change left over, that's money lost. CC's don't have that problem.
Hence, CC is safer than cash.
