It's an internet company that is going to have the biggest IPO ever. They own sites like tmall.com (which is like Amazon) and taobao (which is like ebay).

How is this going to affect most American web users - are we all going to start using tmall instead of amazon, etc.? Is that why it's such a huge IPO? Are they going to change the names of their sites?

They shouldn't use the name alibaba. It might be offensive to mideasterners, plus "baba" means poop in Chinese.

Silly me, I've known about Alibaba for years but just assumed they were Middle Eastern rather than Chinese. They've got great deals but I can't buy in the quantities traded there. (eek)

It's not going to affect US users one single bit. Just because a company is listed here that doesn't mean American users are suddenly going to change their habit.

What this means is that the stock market is getting more and more global. A Chinese company can list in the USA and vice versa. In the future, we may see more and more company decide to list their stocks at a foreign country; including US companies.

FWIW Yahoo owns like 23% of Alibaba, and will be selling 9% of their share in the IPO. If you want a slight proxy.

I was in talks with 2 suppliers on Alibaba for some fishing reels manufactured in China and India. Both vendors turned out to be scammers and were continually pushing for 'deposits'. It was possibly the same company. I was asking for samples of the product so I could inspect for workmanship/quality but all they wanted was the deposit. I even said they could send samples COD but they weren't interested in doing so.

That's when I knew if I sent any money, I would neither see product or the money returned.

This is also my concern. Given the amount of scamming that I went through on ebay I was really nervous with alibaba. However I did want to open up a mens clothing store so I talked to a few people on ali to get some samples, they consistently asked me for deposits. Im not talking 10 bucks to cover the shipping and materials cost either. They wanted hundreds up front with no contract or legal reciprocity. This was literally just some "Joe" in another country with a picture of a jacket and an account number.

I rarely, if ever send money online, especially if I don't know the seller.
If someone wants money before shipping, tell them to ship 1/2 and you'll pay 1/2. That way, you know they're legit and you're both equally protected or screwed (depending on the outcome).

Get your fishing reels made in the US, or Latin America

We need to block Alibaba just like the Chinese block outside websites. We don't need to make it EASIER to send the last scraps of manufacturing to The People's Republic of Forced Abortion. When are we going to stop groveling and sniveling like worms at the feet of China, begging them to take our jobs, our skills, and our intellectual property so we can be blessed by their cheap lead ridden goods falling like manna from the sky to be hawked by our working poor?
