They might have closed the store because of the minimum wage increase, but if so, why did these other stores in California close?
CALIFORNIA (CLOSING JAN. 28):

5502 Monterey Hwy, San Jose $10.30
151 E 5th St., Long Beach $10
8400 Edgewater Drive, Oakland $12.25
4101 Crenshaw Blcd., Los Angeles $10
2408 Lincoln Ave., Altadena $10
6820 Eastern Ave., Bell Gardens $10
701 W Cesar E Chavez Ave., Los Angeles, CA $10
2045 E Highland Ave., San Bernardino, CA $10
12120 Carson St., Hawaiian Gardens, CA $10

Store closings were announced when state minimum wage was $9, but I listed it at the 2016 rate $10

This should not be a surprise. Walmart and most other retailers survive on volume and have low profit margins. To some extent this is a local issue. It makes sense for Walmart to close a store in Oakland and the customers will need to drive further to the next store in an area with lower wages. A new business would need to make the same sort of analysis. Open in Oakland with high wages or nearby with lower wages?

If the MW had increased in the State instead of just Oakland, would Walmart have closed the store? Maybe not. They might have made the small increases in prices and still remained competitive. That is certainly what those who favor increasing MW would like us to believe. Everyone loves to hate Walmart but the truth is Walmart has a lot of concern about their viability in the future. They have a lot of 20 year old stores. What was acceptable 20 years ago, it substandard now. Everyone seems to moan about the deterioration of the "middle class" but the facts are our standards of living and expectations have increased noticeably over the past couple decades. Walmart has been closing a lot of the older stores. Sometimes they remodel but usually they just close the store and start over somewhere else. Walmart is also under heavy competition from Amazon. More and more we are seeing the end of brick and mortar stores with online shopping increasing rapidly.

Good points . Also we will hear about when Walmart closed because it's a huge multinational

When the mom and pop places close that only have 1 location and not thousands it'll be a small blip on the news but likely no news coverage .
People will just say " I guess they couldn't make it"

Oh please...they make $6.95 salad bowls, you order and pay online or through an in store kiosk. There are plenty of critical reviews because the people who prepare the food won't talk to you even if you knock on the wall to the prep kitchen to get their attention, so if your order is wrong...oh well.

It works as well as it does because salad has a long shelf life, you would have a very hard time with hot food because you would have to know exactly when the person would arrive at the shop. If you like the concept, then eat there but it's hardly a sign of automation taking over the world.

Critical Reviews? did you see the Yelp reviews ?? They are amazing!

eatsa - 468 Photos - Salad - Financial District - San Francisco, CA - Reviews - Yelp
Eatsa - 153 Photos - Salad - Woodland Hills - Woodland Hills, CA - Reviews - Yelp

Hardly any of the reviews are negative and the vast majority rated it 4 Stars

You don't think this concept is going to grow?

A very time with hot food? Have you been to fast food restaurants recently? Most of the stuff is barely warm and tastes like it's sitting around.
I can totally see people ordering their Big Macs and Chalupas from these machines..and loving it!

It looks like they do have employees. But there is zero interaction between employee and customer. Staffing costs are greatly reduced.

Here is more info and better pictures of it .

It's flipping salads, not hamburgers. You can take an order for a salad and hold it for 40 minutes at least. And the negative reviews mention the the employees who work preparing the food refuse to interact with customers who have problems so if your order is wrong suck it up.
