Raising the federal minimum wage has been a Democratic priority for years, and Democrats now control the White House and Congress for the first time in a decade. So now might seem like the time.

On a national level it will drive cost push inflation and lead to an almost immediate price shock at the grocery store as undocumented workers get a 35%~50% raise. This will be fun. I hope he succeeds. Actually hopefully he gets $15 through.

It'll lead to higher unemployment.. That's the only thing I can say for certain. The push has been on for automation.. Expect that effort to be redoubled.

You'll wind up at a McDonalds and there'll be 2 people in the store. You and one employee.. I nearly said "Cook", but there'll be a robot doing that, too. Eventually, when things get settled, it'll just be you and an 800 number to call if you have a problem.

Are McDonalds in Europe only staffed with two people or would this simply be a US phenomenon?

The hit will be in industrial ag and meat processing which are staffed with armies of undocumented workers making minimum wage. Biden will basically spike labor costs and that will be passed down to suppliers and then to consumers.

Good bye dollar menu

Already our Safeway is up to 8 self-check stations, our Kroger has 12, Home Depot 8, and the nearest Walmart Superstore has 0 cashiers, it's all self-check. Around here a federal minimum of $15 won't make much difference, though, those jobs are already paying at least $17 just to be able to attract workers.

my experience with McDonalds in Europe is they do have very limited staff. You order off a computer screen, there is an employee to hand you your order.

Keep telling yourselves it won't make much difference one way or the other.

When minimum wage goes up, ALL wages tend to go up. And prices tend to go up.

2.3 percent of workers make minimum wage by the way. Half of these workers are under age 25. Only 1 percent of full time workers earn minimum wage. That means 99 percent of full time workers earn more than minimum wage. But I'm sure they're all excited because like I said, when minimum wage goes up, all wages tend to go up.

Good times.

Agreed. There's no free lunch here.

When minimum wage goes up, it puts pressure on both the cost of goods/services and on wages higher up the employment ladder. When you pay minimum wage workers more, you also need to pay the next rung of workers more, and so forth.

The minimum wage is $0, and people will discover that as standards rise and replacement options expand.
