But the predictions don't take into account government intervention which could make the problem either worse or less than predicted.

We don't know what the Fed will pull out of it's hat tomorrow.
Yesterday was a cut in rates.
Today is partial ownership in banks.

Who knows what is next..but it could definitely skew predictions.

A lot is going to change. We are not in a business cycle where things will automatically go up again and return to normal. What people don't realize just yet, is that our government is changing, our position as a world leader is changing. Life as many of us know it is coming to an end.
