This has been going on for a while ..... definitely stock up on your favorite imported foods and drinks, necessities and luxuries alike. And of course pull out some of the flowers in your garden and start planting vegetables in their place.
It's a good idea to stash some non-perishables anyway, regardless of shipping problems, as you might lose your job or income from other sources. Being able to eat your stored food will mean one less expense.
I would think NYC must be getting hit pretty hard. I imagine a lot of those high paid Wall Streeters and bankers don't know how to live poor. Hard times everywhere.
Time to buckle up. And I'd argue that it's not just your favorite imported foods and drinks to stock up on.
I'd be willing to be that many of us would be surprised if we saw the amount of basic staples that we eat every day, that are in fact not grown here and must be imported from elsewhere.

This might just be coincidental but my husband ordered a part for his chainsaw last month - was told it would be in stock in a couple of days.............it has now been a month The part is being shipped from Germany.
I also ordered a couple of things online for the house - a rug and a lamp - apparently they're "on back order" too...............
I think it is possible that panic hording may end up adding more to the problem than just using wisdom in purchasing sensibly now. By all means, people should always have emergency supplies in their home for a whole variety of reasons, but getting in a place emotionally where you feel scared enough to buy up all the jam in England is probably a knee jerk reaction. If things get bad, and they may very well, then it would be best to invest in some good staple food....not fancy stuff you can live without.

IMHO..not coincidence. The BDI is probably the only index that is pure and not prone to any manipulation.
It takes time for indicators to be felt on "main street". We are feeling the effects of what the drop in the BDI means.
Next time you go food shopping take a good look at the shelves and how they are stocked (or not) and see if they are front loading the shelves (1 or two cans and nothing behind it).

Agreed - panic buying and hoarding doesn't help and does add to the problem but quietly building an emergency stock of staples doesn't seem like a bad idea given the way things are going.......
I live in the US now, not England so I won't be causing a jam crisis over there!!!!!!!! Nor here for that matter
