In this day and time, I would not be doing any new business startup. I have a wait and see attitude right now.

And, this recession is not entirely BHO's fault, it began in 2006. And, the USA is not the only country experiencing a recession, this is global.

To be fair, the world is very interconnected with the United States, especially countries like China, which depend on the US for such a large percent of their economic production.

Why? Are you giving away $50k to the best idea or just scamming ideas for yourself? *shoot my little smilies are missing*

You could start a small day care and slowly build it up. Everyone with kids needs a day care.

Provide something everybody needs. Or provide something wholesale to retail companies.
For example, be the person who makes potato chip bags, not the chips themselves.

I think we're too dependent on China, and before this was Taiwan, and before that Japan for regular everyday items. I think America needs to regain some it's independence, and stop buying from overseas, make our own as we used to do.

In my area, the economy is just so so. If I had 50 grand, I would buy washers and dryers and do a coin-op laundry because we only have one in the city, and they gouge, $2.50 wash, $0.50 to dry. I'd cutthroat the competition by charging a buck-fifty or buck-seventy-five for a wash, and a quarter to dry, and still make money doing it.

1. Liquor Store
2. Medical Marijuana Store
3. Porn Shop or Sex Toy Parties

No sense being in fast foods, it's dog eat dog and $50k won't get you in the door. I've heard that Starbucks wants $500k to award a franchise, not sure how true that is. Most of the old mom and pop stores that sold office supplies, hardware, clothing, books, auto parts, linens, appliances, shoes, kitchen items, pharmacies, sporting goods, beauty supplies, groceries, you name it, were rolled up into big box stores or large national chains. Only a few mom/pop stores remain in each category, usually in rural areas, blighted city districts or old downtowns where big boxes can't build.

Here in Colorado, the laws prohibit any person from owning more than one liquor license, so that's still a mom and pop biz here, as it is in many places, and like it or not, addictive substances are very profitable.

Pole dancing and lawn care business. I think you could charge extra for all the dirty old men who would pay to have both services done at the same time.
