As others have said, it depends on the teacher. I had an elderly English teacher in 6th grade. She was one of the best teachers I ever had and helped me immensely with my understanding of grammar.
I talk to teachers all the time who say it it nearly impossible to get a new job in a school if you are older than 50 years old because the principals and and other school administrators on the hiring committee prefer younger teachers. Is it possible School Principals and Administrators have the same bias against older teachers as some parents?
Yes, it is nearly impossible to get a job if you have several years experience.....they "prefer" younger teachers because they "prefer" to pay the least they can pay. Teacher pay is based on years of experience......it maxes out at about 20-25 years, I think. So at 50 you are at the top of your pay grade. Principals are accountable to admin for their budgets so naturally they "prefer" less experienced teachers. Follow the money.
Our school district is known in this area for having teachers who stay for a LONG time. It has been that way for as long as I know of. When I went to 1st grade, I had the same teacher my Father did for 1st grade. she was awesome and I still remember her 40+ years later. My sons are now in the school system and a majority of their teachers have been here 25+ years. The biggest losses to this District are when the older teachers decide to retire. A lot of the elementary/middle school teachers were 40+ years of experience overall, and 30+ years in this District.
Give me a teacher with 40 years of dealing with kids any day of the week over a new grad teacher. A new grad teacher has to start somewhere I know, but every single classroom I have seen with a teacher that has 20+ years of experience is much calmer. Just a nicer "feel" to the class.
My sons third grade teacher is now teaching my eight year old third grade grand daughter now.. My son is now almost 32..
She pulled an old picture of my son when he was in her class to show to his niece when he was in her class...My grand daughter thought that it was "Neat"....
My son's first grade teacher has been in the same school teaching the same grade for 40 years! Is this good or would you fear she was stuck in her ways, out of date, out of touch and burned out? Would you prefer a younger teacher for your kids?
I am not sure 40 years go back far enough...that would make it 60's, 70's generation...which could be a "no-no" in my book.
I sure wish my child could have a 60 years teacher though .

I hope you're joking. I was around in those days and the majority of the population was not sitting around stoned and flashing each other peace signs all the time. On the other hand, I was, and I'm perfectly respectable nowadays. Also I have some great stories about hitchhiking around the US. Honestly, most of us had real jobs. Hard to believe I know and disappointing for those who think we just laid around stoned in crash pads all day and partied all night. Yay, I know, there are still people who do that and they come from all age groups.

Honestly, most of us had real jobs. Hard to believe I know and disappointing for those who think we just laid around stoned in crash pads all day and partied all night. Yay, I know, there are still people who do that and they come from all age groups.
