A free ride may be ending for many Illinois students, who, like others in cash-strapped school districts nationwide, may have to pay for their bus trip to school.

NBCChicago.com is reporting that the Illinois Board of Education is considering the move, offering districts in the state the options of eliminating buses altogether or having parents pay the transportation cost. The Illinois school system serves about 2.1 million students.

In our town in Massachusetts we pay $300 a year per child for the school bus. The charge applies if the distance to the school is under 2 miles and/or for students above grade 6. There may be a sibling discount but I am not sure about that yet.

I don't like paying for it but it is very helpful for my son to take the bus and charging for the bus seems better than cutting more services or teachers. For families that have to use the bus for their kids to go to school and can not afford it then it would be a problem.
