Is it considered to be a legitimate fire drill in a public school if the students are off that day? I know requirements vary from state to state but I'd like to know if this is considered valid in your state.
Thanks.

I believe one of the date collection points of a public school fire drill is the length of time to complete the "fire drill." This means teachers must report if all students are accounted for. I'm not sure how this would be done if there were no students in the school.

isn't the point of a fire drill to inform teachers and students on what to do in case of fire.

I'm a retired teacher and I remember once or twice when we had fire drills on non-student attendance days. Once we were in the middle of an inservice and a couple hundred teachers had to get out the front doors all at once and the bosses had to make sure that everyone was out. The teachers assumed that administration was being jerks but it is possible that they are required to have fire drills in a variety of situations. I remember a fire drill after school when every teacher and janitor had to leave the building.

I'm not sure if these were "official" or extra drills.

This is interesting. The last time a fire drill occured on my planning period, I stayed in my classroom and continued grading papers. Next time I will make sure I am counted.

Wow. No way could I get away with that. We have to wear these bright orange, mesh vests. All students have to be accounted for. The announce how long it took to exit the bldg., how many doors were left open, etc. If my students are not with me, I have to go to where they are. They are pretty strict with the drills and even more strict with safety inspections.

They could have held the drill to ensure the teachers knew what to do before instituting something new on the students.

Hey teach, I did that once and our Vice Principal made sure to tell me that it wouldn't happen again.

I work in emergency management. We schedule our drills based on the day, regardless of whether or not school is in session. We probably have about 3-5 drills per year that occur on days when school is not in session even though the schools are mandated to participate and report to us.
