The 1957 Sputnik launch scared Americans into wanting better science and math education for our kids but did not directly cause the creation of the DoE 22 years later.

I don't believe the Department of Education will be eliminated in my lifetime. Bob Dole suggested it during the presidential capaign in 1996 and the idea was not greeted with much enthusiasm by voters.

Prior to 1953, there was an "Office of Education". There has been some federal involvement in education for over 100 years. See post #14.

I believe the federal government is unfairly blamed at times. The lack of success and achievement is not solely due to "too much government" and to be quite frank, there are certain states I have been to in the South that would struggle mightily should the responsibility of education be left up to them.

Education in general encompasses a broader problem because of today's approach which is "one size fits all", "no child left behind", and insane amount of funds being diverted to athletics rather than academics.

To answer the OPs question the biggest problem would be (as one poster pointed out), the lack of authority of the government to intervene and regulate standards and rules.

Cheer up all you people who want to make it more a nanny state with bigger govt. running your kids local schools. [The election secured it. God help local and state govt..] Now you get to soak my taxes for for kids who will be, like that fictional Julia, getting the govt. to give you live cradle to grave. As to education, ever notice she was a cartoon? Aimed at those who cannot comprehend READING? Lets add more special ed. Maybe they can teach her to read.

Are you saying we can eliminate the DoE and replace it with the OoE that existed prior to 1953? As I have said, I don't think we will ever, ever get rid of the DoE especially given the results of the recent national election. It's a pipe dream that died with Bob Dole's campaign in 1996.

No, where did you get that from my post? I am saying, there has long (since 1867) been a federal presence along with federal funds in education. There are people on here who think there has only been a federal presence in education since 1980, when DOE was established.

It sucks up a lot of money and I think is should be downsized to an advisory panel with a small staff. We have made education too complex over the last 40 some years, spent a lot of money, and have modest success.
