Asians (namely the Chinese and Japanese) have been in the United States since the 1800s.

Have they always outscored all other demographic groups on standardized/cognitive exams? Or is this a relatively recent phenomenon?

Please share your source

Share your source that Asians have recently outscored all other demographic groups.

Realize also that many the Asians that immigrated US are the far right side of the bell curve Asians - the PhDs, the engineers, the wealthy educated Asians. The mean bell curve Asian is still back in Asia picking rice.

Take a billion people. Take the smartest 0.001% of them and move some of them to the US and draw conclusions that Asians are smarter than non Asians.

Asians have been here since the 1800's, however, we get a lot of immigrants, and the immigrants that do come over tend to be the best and brightest (brain drain from 3rd world countries is an issue).

Since Asians were heavily discriminated against in the 1800s and early 1900s, they probably didn't do so well on what standardized testing there may have been.

Not quite true. Before WWII, most Chinese immigrants were Cantonese peasants with little education.
Many of them came to the US to build railways etc.

After WWII, the US literally banned immigration of "low quality" Asians but some sneaked in.
For your interest, among Chinese green card receivers each year, only a minority have an advanced degree. Most are through (faked) asylums, or depend on relatives.

First off. For the OP.

You need to include more than just Chinese and Japanese for "Asian". Asian is a much larger group.

While the earlier asian were the smarter ones that immigrated to the US years ago, we are talking about 1st and 2nd generations.

They are scoring much higher in certain demographic areas.

All the data are here.

I'm taking an advanced computer science course (for senior undergraduates and graduates) at Harvard. About 40% students in the class are Chinese. Not sure if they are Chinese Americans or Chinese citizens.

Almost all female students are Chinese, with 2 exceptions maybe.

A lot of the Chinese student that are coming over the US for school isn't necessarily the really smart ones. It's very competitive in China and if they can't get into a good college over there, the come to the school here.

The big difference now is that these student speaks fluent English.

Asian American scores has increased over the years to the point that it been on par or surpassed White. Internationally (American, all groups) is scores below Asian Countries.

I don't know, but I'm not even sure there's any way to determine a satisfactory answer to your question. History isn't black and white, and America especially is rife with civil injustice and inequality in its very short existence. Asian immigrants were persecuted at various milestones in the past couple centuries, and not afforded the same opportunities professionally or academically. So I reckon it's very tough to give you a simple, elegant answer.

As has been explained by others, this was certainly not the case historically. It is a bit more true perhaps in the last half-century.

Hmm, except that the US consistently lags behind other parts of the world, including many Asian nations, in reading and math proficiency scores. The US rankings include "the smartest .001%" that you suggest we've managed to siphon away from these other countries, otherwise we'd be even further behind. I think it's a relatively recent phenomenon. Before the immigration laws were changed, I recall being in school with classmates whose forbears had come from China and Japan. They were pure Asian, but third or fourth generation. They were not particularly good students - seemed like everyone else.

On the other hand, the children of the recent immigrants from Asia are often bright and very driven to achieve. Completely different type of student. It will be interesting to see if their children are just as high achievers.
