You've shown zero research as well on the subject. Your link isn't on the public of the issue or what agenda Elwood public schools has. I would like some evidence given on the agenda of the Elwood public school system, you're ignoring that.

Kindergarten is reading, writing and math.
Kindergarten has turned into "real" school now.
I went to kindergarten about the same time as you.
I remember playing games, sharing, listening to stories, following directions.
It was about building social skills to get us ready for first grade.
And kindergarten was optional and not even a full day..either AM or PM depending on your birthday month.
Yes, much of it (IMO) due to parental expectations. When I worked in a pre-k-8 district, parents expected reading and writing in preschool with 3 and 4 year olds. I always thought of it as having the kids learn memorization to impress their friends. It's not true learning, IMO but trained seal tricks. Many of the kids that young do not have the hand musculature developed to hold a pencil properly, and they end up using compensatory grasps that become entrenched, leading to difficulty with writing for their entire school career.
I am a music teacher who is in charge of elementary programs. These programs are what you remember for the rest of your lives from this tender age of youth. You might not remember doing alphabet worksheets, but you sure as heck remember playing the xylophone and receiving a standing ovation! Creating new brain neuron connections while learning music and working together to present a musical is an important part of childhood.

Far too much emphasis is being placed on young children these days and they can't just be kids. Educators think that because the overall test scores are down vs the rest of the world - that they must fill their heads with more. How about going back to the old way of teaching in the 60's/70's - where kids actually learned and excelled. There were no calculators for tests, there were no 2 + 2 doesn't equal 5 but he's close, there were only 1 or 2 teachers conferences a year - we didn't have a week off in Jan/Feb for midterms. If you took a 1/2 yr class - come testing - you were given that test over a couple of different class days - the whole school didn't get the week off.
There's also too much emphasis on college. Many are graduating and finding they can't afford college - or graduating college with huge loans and no jobs. Go back to allowing more business type courses in high school and Boces/Shop classes - not everyone is college material and a plumber or mechanic make much more than a lot of graduates with college degrees.
Some will argue that old school was just a lot of memorization but I at least can make change without the use of a calculator unlike most of the young cashiers today.
The newspaper is being alarmist. There was simply a horrific winter and there were too many lessons lost to snow.
Kindergarten should be fun for children and therefore missing days due to the harsh winter shouldn't have any effect in this situation.
