it should be like when we were in school, english first, and then a second language, of your choice. most of our day-to-day transactions are done in english so the primary focus should still be english.

I TOTALLY agree. And kids' brains are like sponges when it comes to learning languages. I think it's a great thing, as can get you so far in many ways (jobs, travel, speaking to nonnatives, and even just being able to say "hey, I'm fluent!") In addition, learning a language will improve your English as well. I take French and Spanish and from it, I now thoroughly understand the technicalities of English as well (like subject-verb agreement, modifiers, etc).

I agree with most of you about making this country not only a bilingual but a multilingual country. Did you know that european students have to choose 2 additional languages to study besides their own mother tongue?
