You'll get varying answers. I'm not aware of "grade school" being an official term.
It's roughly synonymous with "elementary school" and the old-fashioned term "grammar school". Compare the terms "junior high school", "intermediate school", and "middle school".
To me "grade school" is grades 1 thru 6. K is Kindergarten.
"I have a high schooler"
"I have a middle schooler"
"I have a grade schooler"
"I have a kindergartener"
In my area it means any school with grades below middle school/junior high or high school. So it usually is 4K or K to 5, or 4K or K to 6, if all of the grades are in one building, with one principal it may be K-8.
Where I grew up its K-4 5-8 (now) in one school district, 9-12 in regional HS
