hi education forum

I'm just wondering what the majority of people think "Grade School" means. To me it seem it refers to K5, but to some others it means K12 or even K8?

thanks

It's used for elementary and middle school years where I am. Everything below high school.

You'll get varying answers. I'm not aware of "grade school" being an official term.

It's roughly synonymous with "elementary school" and the old-fashioned term "grammar school". Compare the terms "junior high school", "intermediate school", and "middle school".

To me "grade school" is grades 1 thru 6. K is Kindergarten.

"I have a high schooler"
"I have a middle schooler"
"I have a grade schooler"
"I have a kindergartener"

In my area it means any school with grades below middle school/junior high or high school. So it usually is 4K or K to 5, or 4K or K to 6, if all of the grades are in one building, with one principal it may be K-8.

Its such an ambiguous term is not worth using.

Yes, judging from the answers, that's an accurate statement. That said, to me, it is synonymous with elementary school, which in turn means K-5.

I agree and I don't know too many people who use that term because it could be any grade before High School.
