I hope that all of you, especially fellow educators, have heard the words of Dr. Randy Pausch, a computer science professor from Carnegie Mellon University.
He came into the national spotlight in 2007 after giving a lecture at the university entitled "The Final Lecture". This was a talk that all professors were asked to give to the student body as a hypothetical last lecture that would sum up the professors' ambitions and dreams.
Ironically, having been diagnosed a short time before with terminal pancreatic cancer, Dr. Pausch was sure that he was about to give his final lecture. It was one not of regret and mourning, however, but one that celebrated all of his dreams and joys of his life. An inspiring, up-lifting talk that still brings great hope to all that hear it.
Shortly before he was to give his final lecture presentation, the university changed the title from "The Final Lecture" to "Journeys". Dr. Pausch quipped in his lecture, "I thought, damn, I finally nailed the venue and they renamed it,"
I do hope that you all take the opportunity to either view it on UTube as video-taped or read it. Dr. Randy Pausch died this week at 47 yrs. old of pancreatic cancer.
I am sorry to say, Bored2Day, that I went to my local bookstore today to pick up the book. Needless to say, it sold out since Dr. Pausch's death.
I ordered it online so should recieve it early next week.
I did hear on ABC's night news that Primetime on Tuesday is dedicating the hour to Randy Pausch. I will definitely be watching. Also, GMA, has a segment on Monday morning highlighting his life.

We did watch ABC's tribute to Dr. Pausch. Beautifully done piece. Yes, the tribute left many in tears. I only hope his family will heal and treasure the many hearts Randy Pausch touched not only in the lecture halls of C-M but also those lives he touched out of the education arena.
As a fellow teacher, I hope I've been able to reach a few souls who otherwise might not had/have the chance to live meaningful lives. Much as Randy did.
I first saw his lecture in early 2007 and had forgotten his name. I had been searching all over the net and finally found it. I watched the ABC special as well this week and was crying like a baby. Need to get the book though. Have been recommending many people see the lecture.
My ex took a class from him some years ago. Who knew back then that he would become famous, and for unfortunate reasons no less. Small world.
