Lafayette schools to ban cell phones; join the conversation | theadvertiser.com | The Advertiser
If they drive to school then they can keep them in their vehicle. Cell phones aren't just a portable telephone anymore. According to the article, there've been cases of students looking at internet porn, text messaging, and even taking photos up the teacher's skirts and that's just what they know about. Modern cell phones are a cheater's dream. With access to the internet, it's better than an open book test.

Cell phones are a distraction in schools. If an emergency occurs the parents can leave a message at the school's office.

I agree with this ban.
You go to school to learn. Not to be pre-occupied about who you will talk to or text next.
They should be banned at schools, and the work place if it interrupts you doing your job.

I live in a rural area so I carry a cell phone in my car for emergencies. Other than that, I hate cell phones. They totally take away your privacy and indepencence. I would go crazy if anyone had access to me 24/7.
The purpose of going to school is to learn. PERIOD! You have plenty of time to talk to your friends at lunch, breaks and between classes.
If students have an emergency, school officials are always available to contact parents and vice versa.
I think cell phones should be the next SAY NO campaign.
My biggest pet peeve is to get stuck behind someone in the supermarket standing in the middle of the isle talking about their last sexual encounter with their boyfriend. TOO MUCH INFORMATION! DON'T YOU GET IT?

I agree with the ban. It's hard to police though. We have a no cell phone policy where I teach but with 30 students in a class, they can be hard to catch. I wish they'd come up with some kind of blocking technology that just renders them useless inside the school building.

I agree with the ban as well. 25 years ago we didn't have this problem and there was no reason for them then and no reason now.

I guess I'll be in the minority here. As a parent who has had kids involved in lots of after school activities, the cell phone has been a godsend.

Require them to be turned off and kept in a locker during the school day, and fine the kids who are caught using them during that time period. A nominal fine, say $5.00 and have it escalate with each violation. Then, use that money to offset non-reimbursed teacher expenses.

It is always intersting how we begin to sound like our parents and grandparents.

Our schools encourage the kids to have cell phones in school-less phone calls/message running for the office staff. They are not allowed to use them during class but they can use them during study hall or lunch. I often text DS17 during school if I need him to do something after school-pick up siblings, milk, etc. Not that they don't have a few problems here and there but for the most part since kids know they can check their text messages in the hallway or at lunch they are pretty good about not using them during class. A little common sense goes a long way and a total ban is only going to make kids sneak them in more.

Yup. I'm often amazed at how smart my mom has gotten over the years. She died when I was 22 and she wasn't very bright back then. Now I'm thinking the woman was brilliant . The older I get, the smarter she gets.
