If I remember correctly from my financial aid days, the registrar's office completes quartely reports that show who is enrolled, and this feeds to the loan servicers, who then put the enrolled students in an in-school deferment.

However, once in awhile, a student would have to go to the registrar's office and have them sign a deferment form (I think this was rare, and happened when a servicer was not set up to have the enrollment information received automatically).

I'd suggest asking the registrar's office at your school to be safe. However, I remember that usually it did happen for students automatically.

I was also wondering if anyone knows this: I have private student loans and my fafsa has been approved so I will be going back to school. However my private student loans are past due so once fafsa kicks in and is reported to the school will my private loan go into deferment?

What do you think FAFSA is?

It is not "approved".
It does not "kick in".
