I was due to move to El Paso 4 years ago but our family got sidetracked to move to a different location. The world's spun around and it looks like we're due to move to El Paso again.

The way I learn best about a city is getting out and around in it with some recommendations from it's residents so I was currious about some top 3 things to do:

Top 3:

Family friendly activities?
Resturants no one should miss?
BBQs? (just cause I love it)
Unique El Paso experiences?
Picture taking opportunities?

Family Friendly Activities: You can go to a UTEP game, Wet N Wild waterpark in the summer, Western Playland Amusement Park(a little small but it is still an amusement park) and other family places like Adventure Zone.
Restaurants: Cattleman's Steakhouse has arguably the best steak in the southwest, No one coming to El Paso should never miss the chance to eat at Chico's Tacos, there are a lot of good restaurants in El Paso, especially Mexican food/TexMex. There are also a lot of Chinese joints that are good.
BBQs: You're in Texas, probably the best place to get bbq. I don't know any bbq places off the top of my head except for Rudy's BBQ because I'm stationed in Colorado now, but there is BBQ galore.
Unique El Paso experiences: You should definitely try to hike the Franklin Mountains. It is somewhat of a challenge but once you get to the top of the peak there are breathtaking views. If you dont want to hike, there is a tramway that takes you up to one of the peaks.
Picture Taking Opportunities: Scenic Drive.

1. 4. 5. Walk to the top of Franklin Mountain by hiking up one of the trails in the Franklin State Park and you can get a view of the East side and West Side and then keep going until you see all of the South portion. Those are incredible views. You can camp there too and it's great because lots of animals come out at night and you usually can have the whole place to yourself, even the rangers leave in the evening.

Hueco Tanks Park is also a fun family place, lots of rock climbing. For a day or weekend trip there's Carlsbad Caverns. Old Mesilla near Las Cruces, Fort Seldon where the buffalo soldiers were stationed. There are some ghost towns near by (don't do the ones across the border), the zoo is nice if you want to stay in town. Saddleblanket is probably a must see and a good place to buy Mexican and Western style blankets.

The El Paso Riverwalk. Forget San Antonio's - here you can walk, jog, horseback-ride, or bicycle along the river and see ducks and other water fowl, chipmunks, and some real nice sunsets where the mountains turn red and purple. No place to spend all your money - it's just a nice nature hike.
