I would lump Kern, Manhattan and Cumberland Circle neighborhoods together as still being very desirable due to the general preservation of the original homes in those three. Sunset Hgts is seeing a lesser renaissance and there are not as many structures in that neighborhood that have been kept up quite as well as in the former three. But there is no denying that the "test of time" has treated most old homes in El Paso with kindness if there has been any continuing maintenance on them at all.

So I will be driving thru El Paso from Austin on my way to AZ (Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam site seeing). Where would you recommend staying the night in El Paso (as far as safety and convenience are concerned).

I'd stay at:
1) any of the chain hotels near Airway and I-10 on the east side (Holiday Inn Express, Hampton, Homewood, Comfort....)
or 2) westside at the Sunland Park or Mesa (exit 11) exits - Holiday Inn, Quality Inn...
It depends if you want to see downtown El Paso in daylight - if not my preference is the westside - it's quieter and may be less expensive

I'm fine with Sunset Heights and used to be Pres of the Neighborhood Assn 1980-5. I am out of town but own a house which I rent out near El Paso High. NO crime problem. Smaller houses than Snset but some have super views of downtown. Really convenient for working downtown too.
