I recall there were colonias east of El Paso that started up in the 80's. I was just curious if anyone knows anything about them. How do the people living in them support themselves, are they legal, do the children go to schools, etc.? How are they governed, taxed, and what services do they get, fire, police, etc.?

They were just collection of shanty homes, no plumbing, stolen electricity, and open sewers. Truly third world conditions on the doorsteps of El Paso. I have not heard anything about them in quite some time.

Yes -- just about everything outside El Paso city limits is considered a colonia but some aren't really the stereotype colonia. They are designated as such but I'm not sure why.

If they can't get jobs, they live off food stamps, WIC, disability and whatever odd jobs they find. Parents often are not legal but the kids are born here and there are many many kids, they go to school and the county sheriff department provides police services and there are fire departments they call. Not everyone in the colonias is especially poor, some are not at all poor. Some just like to live away from the city, own their own land and build on it. There's more freedom.
