First a little background: Moved here from Louisiana in March of 2008 (Military) with my wife and my five kids. We hated this place; no rain, very little trees, dust storms, no lakes, and lots of traffic. Well lets just say times have changed.

WOW, what a wonderful city El Paso is. Why???

1. The people!! We have meant nothing but nice and kind people. Really, I have not encountered one single person who has treated me or my family rudely.
2. The Mountain; the sunsets are beautiful period.
3. The Weather; dry heat beats humid any day. Me and family spent the whole summer outside, with sunblock, while our neighbors stayed in doors and complained about the heat. They should go to Louisiana to see what heat really is.
4. NO MOSQUITOES!!!!
5. Low Crime rate: Still don't understand why there are so many houses with bars on the windows. Maybe I am naive or maybe it is for insurance purposes.
6. Our Church!!
7. Traffic, other than I-10 by the mall...lol

Bottom line El Paso is a great city and I hope I get to stay for a long time.

i am glad you feel that way and that you had an easy adjustment. i am from new orleans, and we never did adjust and my children had a terrible time fitting in. it was not the place for us.

I'm living in far Southeast Texas right now and can't wait to move to El Paso this summer. The heat down here last summer was unbearable and the mosquitoes are terrible year round.

I visited the city this past weekend and really am looking forward to my move in a few days. The weather was great, the people were friendly, and the mountains were beautiful. I think I'm going to like my stay in El Paso too!

It's always good to hear positive things about El Paso and I'm happy you and your family are enjoying your stay here.

I came here in 1968 and have watched many friends come and go over the years. It's been my experience that it takes approximately one year for people to really decide how they feel about El Paso. People tend to miss what they know, such as lots of green, trees, water, etc. and fail to see the beauty of the desert and all that comes with that. I grew up back east too, but I'll never go back there to live. I'll always be in the desert southwest and all it's majestic beauty.

Believe me, the traffic here is nothing compared to Houston, Chicago, Dallas, etc.

I can't wait to move back. If I could choose any place on earth to live it would be el paso. the reason is the people. I moved to EP in 1999 and stayed till 2007. Seemed like the first day I moved there I had friends. People inviting you over for cook outs you just met that day. What EP may lack in some areas it more than makes up for in it's friendly residents.

GREAT to read this thread :0)

and to who ever posted about the heat, I agree!!!! While I know that 100 desert degree's is HOT ~ it has nothing on 98 degrees and 90% humidity!!!!! We are moving to El Paso in July, and the first thing EVERYONE says to me is "oh prepare to bake its soo hot there"..........and I get a kick out of it cuz last summer, it reached 100 over here many days, and at 90% humitidy..........he he he.

anyway i love reading posts about why people love el paso :0) So thanks.

I will confess to not being an El Paso lover but it is hard to give up being from areas like San Francisco. This winter has been so mild and beautiful, it is hard to belive it is only January. I have never liked thunderstorms and am used to dry summers and wet winters. I always get down when the heavy downpours occur in summer and dealing with the floods and other related problems we have experienced since moving here.

But, we worked on the house and are finally making improvements instead of fixes, which make me more positive. We are more connected to our area and that goes a long way to adjustment.

My kids have adjusted well, it's affordable, family is further away but we still manage to see them once/yr., love UTEP. All-in-all we are transitioning and achieving some life goals while here.

I've been here 4 years but may, unfortunately, have to move on in about 2 years. Moving from a big city to El Paso was an adjustment. My main adjustment was moving from green to brown and from urban to suburban living. El Paso is all suburb.

I like El Paso because:
- the mild winters
- no oppressive summer humidity
- great housing prices - more house and land than you'd get for the same price elsewhere
- big single level homes
- landscapes - being able to see for miles and miles
- few overcast days, clear night skies, billons and billions of stars
- Juarez drug prices & no prescription
- laid back & quiet life
- small town but big enough/ enough variety to satisfy all my consumer needs
- short commutes/ more family time
- menudo
