Ok. I need help with several things. My husband may be transferring to the area for work. We have 2 horses and I would not even have a clue about aclimating them to the west as well as knowing what areas of El Paso would be best for people with horses. We would love to have them at our home. We would also love to be around a lot of other horse people. We mostly do trail riding though my daughter does train some and has a lot more experience with show/arena work. Another problem is our daughter will graduate next year from high school. She wants to be a teacher and work with autistic children and special needs children. Any recommendations for schools in the area that would offer degrees for this. I know some schools refer to this as "special education" and others use "intervention specialist". Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm... I have no idea about horses but here are two old threads which may help (I didn't read much of them).

First of all, El Paso is great for horses so they'll acclimate. Fewer mosquitoes than what you'd be used to unless you put them in the valley and then you need to take precautions against the equine blood borne diseases and West Nile.

There are horses on the West Side, still some places for horses on Emory Rd and a few around the old Country Club and out by Canutillo, Chaparral, Far East and Lower Valley. It depends a lot on what you expect to pay for a house and how much land you require. Trail riding is pretty big around here, especially if you trailer them up to the mountains but El Paso is great for riding with a river trail, the desert and the many irrigation canals, except the developers are going crazy paving over every vacant lot and alfalfa field they find, building subdivisions overnight on what used to be great farm land.

As far as universities, there are two in the area, UTEP and NMSU both offer degrees in education.

The other thing about horses, or bicycles or anything outdoors, the weather here is so mild, you can ride horses, etc, just about every day of the year. It's never too hot or too cold, we don't have 6 feet of snow or layers of ice, the arid climate is perfect for horses and they never need to stand around in muck, you don't have to have them in a barn, they do fine with shade and a windbreak.
